It took them six weeks to get there, delayed by the terrain, sickness and arguments between Yunnanese troops and Chiang Kaisheck's army. In July SSD 1 were flown back to India. There they learnt that SSD 2 had attempted to get back to India but the dense jungle had forced them to split into small groups, many of whom were never seen again. Some made it back to India, while others joined Stilwell's men in Burma. The Mission was disbanded in August 1942. INSIGNIA Mission 204, for some reason, wore a silver badge similar to the men of 50 Commando.

As this did not happen, two of the patrols were attached to the LRDG, and in October, 1942 the two remaining patrols joined them as part of the 8th Army. When the desert war was over, there was no employ~ent for the Squadron and they were sent to India where they remained unemployed until the middle of 1944. They were then dispatched to the Persian-Afghan-Russian border to prevent Russian incursions into that area. They returned to India in 1947 where they were disbanded. This was one of the most extraordinary units which formed part of the British Army during the Second World War.

This consisted of a pair of wings outspread horizontally; in the centre was an opened parachute with the royal crest on top. It came in silver or bronze for officers and white. metal for other ranks and, in 1943, a chocolate brown, or silver grey plastic economy badge was made. Collar Badges .
