Ismail Qemali (1844-1919) Qemali is renowned for his proclamation of Albania's independence from Ottoman rule in Vlora in 1912. The first known document in the Albanian language dates from 1462 and the first known book in the language was published in 1555. It was not until 1908 that the Congress of Monastir reached agreement concerning the Albanian alphabet and the orthography of the two branches of the Albanian language, Geg (spoken in Kosova and northern Albania) Page xxii and Tosk (spoken in southern Albania). The language was further standardized into the Unified Literary Albanian (ULA) at the Orthography Congress in Tirana in 1972.
