As discussed later, the use of fixed LO frequency as opposed to a tunable one allows the use of a high comparison frequency and loop bandwidth, potentially allowing large reductions in close-in phase noise. For this reason an architecture that allows the use of a fixed first LO is advantageous for monolithic integration. This can be provided using a variation on the double heterodyne architecture called wideband IF or WBIF. In this approach the entire band of frequencies to be tuned by the receiver is translated down to IF in the first mixer, and then subsequently translated directly to baseband in the second mixer with little or no IF selective filtering.

In the NMOS solution, a high IP3 (10 to 15 dB higher than in bipolar case) is obtained according to the quadratic input characteristic law and the large input dynamic range of MOS devices. Nevertheless, in the 47 low current region, the casco de NMOS device Mc does not provide sufficient input-output insulation (due to low gm) and oscillations may occur for large signals. This effect drastically decreases the IP3 for a low bias current (Fig. 6). In conclusion, taking into account the power consumption, previous simulation results show that the bipolar device is more suitable concerning the NF.
