However it is distinctive in that decisions emerge without anyone apparently having formulated a clear intention or discussed it openly with others. Instead, it would seem the constellation of different people’s circumstances and family or kinship ‘biographies’ are such that it becomes ‘obvious’ to all that a particular course of action is the one to follow. While neither ‘clear intentions’ nor ‘non-decisions’ really signify ‘negotiation’ as it is commonly understood, both involve processes in which kin are actively positioning themselves vis-à-vis one another over time.

Disputes about maintenance payments also served to create tension and spotlight the continuing relevance of the previous relationship. In addition, various social agencies were often more involved in familial matters than was usual in ‘ordinary’ families. Solicitors, courts and other aspects of the legal system were prime instances of this, certainly in those cases where less formal resolutions had proved difficult to agree. Thus the need to settle custody, maintenance and access arrangements required that normally ‘private’ family information had to be divulged and debated, sometimes over a considerable period of time.

Burgoyne and Clark’s (1984) approach to collecting data was framed around a life history perspective. A major advantage of this approach was that it allowed them to highlight the importance of time – or process – within the construction of stepfamily life, an obvious point but one which is sometimes underplayed in analyses of stepfamilies. There are two related issues warranting consideration here. First, as with all families, time alters the nature of stepfamily relationships simply as a consequence of ageing.
