All in all, Calvin’s Institutes established him, along with Luther, as the intellectual power-house of the Reformation. 22 5 Geneva As we havc seen, Calvin, despite all his protestations of the love of pure scholarship, was concerned in the Institutes with essentially practical questions of religion. This basic practicality was to have ample scope in the active work that Calvin did in the Reformation of the city of Geneva. Not only did this reticent scholar, as he liked to see himself, embark on an intensely public life of struggle, fame and notoriety, but this deeply patriotic Frenchman was to spend the remainder of his life in exile and after the mid-1530s never saw his beloved France again.

The Perrinist government of the early 1550s was a narrow oligarchy which provoked vocal resentment in this jealously republican city at the prospect of rule by a single dynasty which would lead Geneva into slavery. The Perrinist riot of 16 May 1555 had unmistakeable undertones of an attempted putsch by a would-be dictator. Thus, by 1555 it was the Calvinists and Calvin, with his unassuming title of ‘moderator of the Genevan company of pastors’, who had come to appear in the guise of defenders of republican liberty and equal citizenship.

Yet, defective as he may have been as a long-term builder, Farel clearly excelled as a psychologist, for he knew exactly how to crack the defences of Calvin’s self-image as a scholar in retirement from the active world. As Calvin showed in the Institutes, the essential characteristic of Christ, the pattern for all Christians, was obedience to the will of the Father. Farel now confronted Calvin with a test of obedience, the kind of test he felt he had passed a couple of years before with his conversion in response to God’s will.
