69 glee at 12 percent MC. The wood is diffuse-porous, with rays almost too small to be seen. It is dif&:ult to distinguish between the birch woods, although yellow and black bin::h are the heaviest. Yellow birch is used in veneer production, interior paneling, kitchen cabinets and furniture (often stained as "fi:uitwood"). It is also used as flooring, toys, doors, sash, trim, cutting boards and toothpicks. Its availability; relatively low price and good working qualities make it an ideal wood for almost any type of cabinetwork.

Color ranges fi:om straw yellow through brown, and fi:om reddish-brown to almost black. The density seems to be related to the color, the darker woods being heavier. 52 g/cc at 12 percent MC. The wood feels slightly oily; has a rancid odor and is coarse textured. Rays are quite conspicuous for a conifer. The heartwood is extremely decay-resistant and is used extensively for siding, dock and bridge timbers, fence posts, silos, greenhouse frames , ship building, decks and garden furniture . Inside, it is used for doors, sash, trim, paneling, boxes, crates, vats and containers for corrosive chemicals .
