Block planes are usually the first plane a beginning woodworker acquires. They are smaller than bench planes and can be used with one hand. These planes excel at cutting end grain. Block planes are good for small planing jobs.
Many of the guards that come with machines are poorly designed, and there is a tendency in the woodworking community to operate tools without their guards. This is not a good idea.
