So what’s wrong with that? After all, institutions of higher learning exist to teach, don’t they? Well, not entirely. The German model of higher education, adapted by American society over the past century, articulates a three-part mission for the academy. This mission is commonly formulated as “Teaching, Research, and Service”. Every junior faculty member knows that the path to tenure requires attention to all three. The professor aspiring to become tenured must demonstrate skill in teaching, the ability to conduct research that will gain the respect of academic peers and be published in prestigious peer reviewed journals, and the capacity for service: to the department, the university, the academic society.

In the initial survey, we also asked about activities that would help establish relationships, develop collaboration, and ensure that the librarian’s work was well aligned with the needs of the customer group. A significant finding was that academic librarians seem less likely to participate in the kinds of activities that strengthen their relationships with non-librarian colleagues, and provide opportunities to improve their responsiveness to those colleagues’ needs. We asked respondents whether they had engaged in any of ten activities related to both task-oriented and social communication and interaction.
