Photo 29 shows the piston, gudgeon-pin, and con-rod assembly. In this model the piston is a grade 17 grey cast iron, as described in Chapter 2, selected for low sliding-wear in the cylinder. But it has a relatively high inertia and for higher performance, use of an aluminium alloy piston is required. The small size makes use of compression rings, universal in larger engines, impractical for commercial units. However, the material combination used has a proven record of sealing effectiveness without the need for piston rings.
Therefore, boiler fabrication should be treated with due respect, but with proper experience it does provide a perfectly practical activity for the home worker, and there is no shortage of information with which to tackle the subject (see Bibliography). Photo 14 Boiler build nearing completion in Ron Perry’s workshop. Table 2 Copper for boilers. We are primarily concerned with the materials of construction here, and it is worth noting the approach taken by makers of model loco boilers in the almost universal choice of copper (Cu) for the main construction.
Table 3 Silver soldering alloys – tensile (UTS) and shear strength. 5cc capacity, manufactured by the Progress Aero Works of Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK. This is a fine example of precision engineering, delightfully simple in design and successfully manufactured by a small independent business, into an exacting commercial market. Founded in 1948, over three generations its proprietors have held numerous UK and even European championships in the field of speed control-line flying with engines basically similar to that illustrated.
