Mit Werten in der Politik verhält es sich wie mit vielen Dingen im Leben: Erst wenn sie nicht mehr da sind, wird deutlich, wie sehr sie fehlen. 19 Language is Being's Other in and through which Being always withdraws. Being is a free play of figuration and not something antecedent that is poorly embodied in things, words, or ideas. " Derrida's move to textuality is a trenchant criticism of any and all ontologies that seek to reduce difference to the same or assume that talk about Being does not entail problems of figuration. His deconstruction of texts also stands as a critique of linguistic idolatry in the identification of any sign, thing, or system with the fullness of truth.

The wild plurality and fragmentation of our situation rightly oppose all oppressive structures and monisms, but they also threaten us with conceptual, moral, and religious chaos. 4 Any attempt to reflect on the coherence of our experience seems undone or beside the point. Of course, a host of methods and theories has been developed to explore the moral, religious, and linguistic dimensions of experience. What is unique about our situation is not the pluralism of approaches and interpretations of the human conditionthat has always been the casebut the seeming fragmentation of our discourse about the myriad dimensions of human experience.
