A team of three senior- or graduate-level students work as aids with the Field Work course and are provided with a small stipend. Each member of the team is assigned four learning community work groups. The instructional aids meet with the professor each week to prepare for the upcoming class by working through the activity and to discuss any emerging concerns or needs of the students.

Continuing in this tradition, universities are providing students with opportunities to gain personal and professional skills through civic engagement (Sweitzer & King, 2009). The Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program and Youth Development (YD) program at Indiana University have taken seriously the need for students to have experiential learning opportunities.
