There are many technologies to support testing of this kind. Objective measures for testing factual knowledge have a very strong theoretical and empirical foundation. One example of a well-established educational technology to support objective testing is item response theory (IRT; see van der Linden & Hambleton, 1997), which is a mathematical method to determine the probability of an individual’s likelihood of responding correctly to a particular test item. Learning processes are somewhat more complicated.
Each of the foundation pillars briefly characterized above has its own set of supporting disciplines and bodies of knowledge, which are also interrelated and which will be discussed in subsequent chapters of this volume. This aspect of educational technology foundations leads to an alternative metaphor for a foundation. Rather than separate but obviously interrelated pillars, one might consider cement.
