By providing brightness contrast, the lighting designer is able to create an environment that has the attributes of a sunny day. In truth, the signiicant difference between a “dull, dreary” day and a “bright, cheerful” one is the quality of light.

Electric light has been used for more than 130 years. But the light emitted by older sources, such as incandescent and halogen lamps (“lamp” is the technical word for lightbulb), contains more long (red) wavelengths. The problem now is that our world is increasingly illuminated by sources rich in the short‐wavelength (blue) region of the spectrum. Sources with short wavelengths cause 40 percent less melatonin to be produced than incandescent and halogen sources, causing people to feel more awake an hour after the lights are turned off.
