Some storytellers also modify stories by pointing to examples in the immediate environment such as a tree, a hill, or even someone in the audience, making the story come alive for that particular audience, says Rose Mwangi (1982). As I learned about the way stories are inseparable from their larger context, I became aware of certain principles that many Navajos use to organize their views of life. One that I already mentioned is the importance of seeking balance. Another key principle is a holistic approach to life. In the Western world, people often tend to place things and activities into categories. Westerners also tend to think in terms of dichotomies or opposites like humans versus nature and the secular versus the sacred.

And, unlike written stories, oral stories were available to everyone. Stories were primarily told to teach children through indirect means. For example, rather than directly correcting a child’s behavior, adults would discuss ethical concerns through the characters’ behaviors in a particular story. They also use stories to settle disputes among adults. For instance, if there was a conflict to settle, a story could easily “bring out the subtleties in the dispute,” according to J. Nandwa and A. Â� Bukenya (1983, 52).
