S. EPA (1986) claim that there is little actual evidence for this and recommend washing using the bag rinse method developed by Durham and Wolfe (1962). Their preference for this technique over washing of the hands in a bowl appears to be because it is a standardized procedure and that the data generated are consistent with those in the existing data base. In conclusion, it is not possible to recommend one method for estimating hand exposure over another in so far as accuracy of measurement is concerned.

It should be noted that little attempt has been made to validate methods for the monitoring of dermal exposure, for example using biological monitoring to compare the derivations of absorbed dose. Until such time, all methods should be regarded as providing only an indicative measure of the dermal exposure. The challenge is to find a sampling medium that mimics skin in its pesticide capture and retention characteristics. Given that biological monitoring for determination of absorbed dose does not lend itself to all pesticides, for example, because of extensive metabolism or routes of elimination other than the kidney, there remains a need to develop and refine exposure methods.

The guidance may be useful also to those investigators involved in post-registration surveillance or routine monitoring of exposure to pesticides. The guidance is provided essentially for the measurement of exposure and absorbed dose for quantitative risk assessment. It is not intended to cover biological effect monitoring which may be used as an adjunct to exposure or absorbed dose measurement. RATIONALE FOR THE NEED FOR GUIDELINES FOR THE CONDUCT OF WORKER EXPOSURE STUDIES The essential components of a quantitative risk assessment for operators, workers and bystanders are a detailed evaluation of the toxicity of the compound, the likelihood of the expression of any toxicological effect in humans and an estimation or measurement of the exposure and/or amount absorbed by humans as a consequence of its use.
