However, governance is more fundamental than first appears in this process. Enterprise architecture translates business requirements into technology planning that must include strategic and operational decisions. These decisions must in turn contain decision making for capacity, cost, recovery, survivability, and future-proofing that must be more than theoretical abstracts. Governance is more about communicating between strategic roles (CEO, CFO, CIO, business-unit leaders), operational roles (managers, partner representatives, regulatory agents), and infrastructural roles (integration competency centers, information technology implementers, training staff).

They fail to lead. Worst of all possible architects are those who are so busy gathering requirements, evaluating options, negotiating with their peers, reporting to their superiors, and getting feedback from stakeholders that they never do anything. It is easy to slip into a routine so filled with the process of developing architectural guidelines that nothing is ever produced as a result. It is here that the ability to identify business needs and shareholder expectations of value is essential in order to later convey the purpose and benefits resulting from enterprise architectural deliverables. Identifying opportunities to improve the organization through productivity, efficiency, or asset gains is as important as identifying inefficient architectures, poor buying models, and outdated solutions currently in place. Providing a Plan The chief architect must be able to identify the purpose of information technology solutions, align them with business requirements, and communicate their value to both technical implementers as well as nontechnical stakeholders.
