On the outside, walls were often rendered or hung with slate to reduce the risk of penetrating rain, while internally there were other measures: Mrs Beeton, for example, cautioned against the use of limewash in damp areas ‘as lime wash [sic] loses its binding power under the influence of moisture’, advocating the use of oil paint on wood to reduce the risk of decay. In northern climates chimneys increased ventilation and so reduced damp, although this was often to the discomfort of the occupants, and draught curtains were frequently needed to conserve heat.
