Alcoholics often develop thiamine deficiency and neurodegenerative disease. It was reported that TPK activity was inhibited when ethanol was added to the supernatant of different regions of rat brain tissues (8). However, ethanol did not inhibit the recombinant mouse TPK at a concentration of 25 mM, which is equivalent to 110 mg/dL blood alcohol level (Fig. 2). 4, respectively. mTPK activity was not affected by ethanol in either buffer system tested. Furthermore, no significant inhibition was observed up to an ethanol concentration of 100 mM (data not shown).
